Canadians detained in Egypt in high spirits

The two Canadians detained in Egypt met with a lawyer for the first time since their arrest last Friday, and were reportedly in high spirits despite being held in an overcrowded prison.
John Greyson, a Toronto filmmaker, and Tarek Loubani, a London, Ont., doctor, were arrested in Egypt while passing through Cairo on their way to Gaza.
Loubani was going to Gaza to train emergency room doctors. Greyson was accompanying him, hoping to make a documentary.
“They are in good health, high spirits.” Khaled El Shalakany, managing partner of the law firm representing the two men, told CBC News on Thursday. “What I’ve been told is that they are strong individuals and they are laughing in high spirits despite the situation they are in.”
Greyson’s sister, Cecilia Greyson, told CBC News earlier that she had come across reports of physical abuse, but Shalakany denied that and said the two Canadians are coping well.
However, Shalakany described the prison conditions as “not ideal” due to overcrowded cells. He added that the Canadians are sharing a cell “with many other prisoners.”
Greyson and Loubani are scheduled to have a hearing on Aug. 28.
Shalakany said although there are several petitions to release the two men, that is unlikely to happen before the hearing.
Greyson and Loubani were arrested last week as supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood and ousted president Mohammed Morsi clashed with security forces. The supporters are seeking to reinstate Morsi, who was toppled by the army on July 3 after mass demonstrations against him.
An order has been issued to hold Greyson and Loubani for another 45 days, and that can be renewed for another 45 days.
Shalakany explained that normal legal proceedings are being followed, which means the men may be held for weeks before they see a judge.
“The prosecution and the whole country are facing a crisis and they are swamped, so they are dealing with hundreds, if not thousands, of cases,” he said. “So unfortunately, it’s just being part of a large problem.”
According to a document from the Egyptian prosecutor, Greyson and Loubani, along with seven other foreign nationals, face a range of accusations, including:
In an interview with CBC on Wednesday, Cecilia Greyson called the document misleading as it lumps his brother and Loubani with other foreign nationals without naming them.
As far as she knows, no charges have been laid against the men.

Enphinate Hip Hop Has a New Name

Not many artists initially emerge with a sound that is of a sophisticated eminence in comparison to some of the more solidified artists that have been successfully running the show for years. Nonetheless, Enphinate has arisen from the depths of unknown talent and has materialized into the realm of highly regarded lyricists in relation to hip hop. After listening to his debut album Extinct, many will be stunned by the overall superiority of his work. “Lyrical prodigy” and “accomplished producer” accurately elucidate his style.

Enphinate has only recently been exposed to the publicity of the music world. However, he is not new to music or life. The twenty-seven year old artist has seen enough of life to have a knowledgeable grasp on society as a whole which is clearly depicted in his music. Songs such as “Dreamer” and “Broken Land” radiate an essence of realism, verbally displaying the life of “the streets” and the issues that plague the economy. Bearing this in mind, his tenacious lyrics are met with elaborate beats that suit his lyrical prowess.

Though Enphinate’s style is one that is all his own, many people have compared him to significant artists; Common and MF DOOM seem to be the sole subject of resemblance. His silky voice is comparable to that of Common, while his stanzas are similar to one of the most well-known underground rappers, MF DOOM. All the same, Enphinate draws no emphasis from these comparisons.

In an interview, Enphinate was asked about the state of hip hop. “Hip hop is alive and well,” stated Enphinate. “The only problem is that it doesn’t get the exposure it deserves, and it hasn’t for years. Commercial rap is played constantly on the radio which does nothing more than fill the heads of our youth with filth continuously; money, women, cars, big houses. That’s not what life is all about. My only hope is that more artists will realize this flaw and adapt.”

Hip hop has been criticized since its birth but increasingly over the past few years. A vast majority of listeners and critiques say that rap has become trivial and shallow, lacking content and substance. Though this is a fact, Enphinate is contributing to the role of many talented scholars of hip hop by breaking away from the mold and achieving a high level of music that cannot be mistaken for anything other than splendid underground hip hop.

Enphinate’s debut album Extinct features over twenty songs that are all worthy of a great many repeats, an unfathomable doing that has not been accomplished in quite some time. With the advent of Enphinate, we can expect to see good things happen in the genre of hip hop for years to come.

The vital songs are too many to list, but a reduced catalog is as follows: Price is Write, Immigrant, Respect, Codex, Rapper Stones, Metro, Kickflip, Bam, Awakening, Punch, and Aspirin Pills

Critique of Sir William Braggs Book Concerning The Nature Of Atoms

Sir William Bragg, Nobel prize-winning physicist, developed the Law of Diffraction. With this formula, scientists can measure an atom’s diameter. The measure is so minute as to defy comprehension, but x-rays diffracted from a crystal’s atom surface can be measured with a consistency beyond disputation; therefore, we can know the dimensions of any atom, measured in increments of one-hundred millionth centimeter (10-8 cm), expressed as one Angstrom.

Bragg describes a Universe entirely consisted of atoms, in both gaseous and compound state, and where: combination takes place, and something in the atom itself maintains it when conditions are satisfied. The whole of chemistry is concerned with the nature of these conditions and their results; however, the atoms are never perfectly still; at the least, they vibrate and quiver about average positions, just as the parts of an iron bridge quiver when a train vibrates its span.

Sir William reduces the complexities of science to the most common language; indeed, the book is a physical science primer; yet, it contains considerable information not familiar to the majority. His dissertation requires no scientific background of readers, even while investigating the complex nature, dimension, energy incentives, and attraction between particular atoms — especially the propensity of molecules to grow into more complex conglomerates and in a predictable fashion.

First, as an ancient Alchemist, now in learned science and advanced biochemistry, man endeavors to harness atoms to his own specification and to special needs. Hydrocarbon fuels are a prime example; for here, in the world of atom bonding, crude oil can be refined into ethylene, hexahydrobenzene, naphthalene, etc., simply by addition or removal of carbon-hydrogen attachments. Therefore, we can understand how the simplest molecule (bonding between two or more atoms) can be transformed into more complex forms in the presence of light, temperature, and pressure.

Your critique author would suggest the presence of ‘atom intellectuality,’ in molecular propensity to inhere attraction to its benefit; for, without question, each human body cell (through atom covalence and molecular interaction) communicates with its neighbor cells for mutual survival and programs its own cellular existence independent of contribution from sentient cognizance. However, this observation is beyond Bragg’s intent; for he would address laboratory procedures to determine the mass and number of different elements and therefore the element’s basic properties — not neglecting atom propensity to seek beneficial bonding with other atoms. He continues: ‘in combinations lies their importance. Atoms may be compared to letters of the alphabet, which can be put together into innumerable ways to form words. So can atoms be combined in equal variety to form what we call molecules.’

From radioactive measurement of the different elements, Sir William posits the atoms to be so minute as to require measurement in the 1/100,000,000th cm. To further elucidate atom smallness, electron size is posited to be approximately 1/10,000th of the nucleus. If the reader has some interest concerning the nature of things, then, this book is recommended for novitiate and scholar alike, as a primary introduction to physical science; here, those with interest can investigate the most fundamental nature of atoms in gases, liquids, crystals, and metals.

We, as humans, are but a mass of atomic compounds; our body cells and substrates contain intelligence able to propagate their own survival; and surely, we, intellectually endowed by atomic interaction, would be curious about the intelligence independently committed to sustain our composite intellectuality.

Relative Pitch or Perfect Pitch Which One Is Better

Relative Pitch and Perfect Pitch, as a musician or student of music you’ve likely come across such terms and wonder: what exactly are they? Do I need them? Is it possible to develop? How will they benefit me? Which one is better?

Let’s answer these questions one at a time. First of all, what is Relative Pitch?

Relative Pitch is basically the ability to recognize the distance between any 2 notes by ear and be able to correctly categorize or name the distance or interval. For example, a perfect 5th is 7 half steps from one note to another either ascending or descending. Knowing this is useful but being able to hear it at a lightning fast speed is even more useful and is the skill of Relative Pitch in the most developed sense. There are 21 different intervals and being able to tell them apart and more importantly recognize each one by ear is what makes this skill so valuable to any musician.

Developing relative pitch is possible for anyone willing to put forth some effort in doing ear training exercises every day. It’s worth every bit of effort you put into it for your musical awareness will expand exponentially.

Now we come to defining Perfect Pitch. What is it? It is basically the ability to recognize the pitch of any note by ear without reference to another note or instrument. Also, highly developed Perfect Pitch in singers allows them to sing any note correctly without any accompaniment or starting note. Each of the 12 notes in western music has its own flavor or color. Learning to deeply hear inside each note at a deeper level will allow any music student to appreciate music more and will expand your world in a way you never thought possible.

Some say you have to be born with such an ability but I am living proof that you don’t. I didn’t have it and I developed it. I’m very happy I did as my sense of hearing is so much better than before I had it. My musical ability has increased greatly because of it. Since I did it, anyone can develop it and it’s well worth the effort!

Now the question: which one is better? Some say that Relative Pitch is more important but they are completely different skills and in my opinion, every serious musician should develop both skills.

So there you have it. Both skills are important and if you are a serious musician you will greatly benefit from developing both. In the resource box below I have a lot more information on how to develop them at my personal blog.

Far North strategy snarled by red tape Defence study says

An exhaustive study of how the Canadian military fits into the Conservative government’s Far North strategy warns the overall effort has often lacked political will and direction.
The blunt 72-page assessment, obtained by The Canadian Press under the Access to Information Act, paints a picture of good intentions that have ground to a halt amid bureaucratic red tape and turf wars in Ottawa.
The study comes as Prime Minister Stephen Harper visits the Arctic this week, touting his government’s achievements and meeting with community leaders, as well as aboriginal reserve soldiers.
The review, written by the Defence Science Advisory Board at National Defence, looks at everything from military and public safety issues to the economy of the North and the implications of dealing with local culture.
Intergovernmental committees have been formed, but the plan lacks a “champion” at the political level to provide direction and build consensus among departments, said the review, dated April 2012.
There are many thorny “resource and jurisdictional issues” to be managed, it noted.
“Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development has responsibility for the Northern Strategy, but this is not being developed and overseen at a sufficiently high level,” wrote the defence scientists, whose wide-ranging research was not restricted to the military aspects of the government’s plan.
“A high-level co-ordinating panel at the (deputy minister) level has been established. However, at the lower levels, frustration is the predominant emotion as there is no clear flow of governance and responsibility down to the working level.”
The federal government can often be described by its “stove pipes” that limit the flow of information and produce a reluctance to co-operate, said the report.
“This prevailing culture is bolstered by a set of rules, which can stymie well-meaning attempts to progress initiatives through logical co-operation,” defence researchers wrote.
“As a result efforts to make operational aspects of the government’s northern strategy are not seen by local residents as progressing as rapidly as possible.”
The Conservatives, on the other hand, insist they have made “tremendous strides” forward and that economic development in the region is progressing like never before.
The government says investments in science have led to resource discoveries and the commercialization of deposits.
The most recent federal budget poured in $200 million for the construction of an all-season gravel road from Inuvik to Tuktoyaktuk in the Northwest Territories.
The Conservatives also underscore the $241 million spent over the last five years to connect First Nations youth with skills training and jobs.

Remembering Whitney by Cissy Houston

I have always felt that Whitney Houston was one of the greatest singers of all time. I don’t know of anyone who can hit those high notes like Whitney. Anyone who has heard her sing songs like “The Greatest Love of All” and her stirring version of “The Star Spangled Banner” would know what I am talking about. I have heard these songs many, many times but it still gives me chills when I’m driving along and I hear one of these hits on the radio. This is why I had to read Remembering Whitney.

Many of the reviewers who read this book stated that Cissy Houston really wrote this book about herself and what happened in her career. That did not bother me because I learned many interesting things about Cissy that I did not know. For instance, she was a backup singer for Elvis Presley as part of the Sweet Inspirations.

Cissy gives plenty of details about Whitney from the time of her birth up to her tragic death. There were several periods of good and bad times. She tells about Whitney’s modeling career, how she was bullied in school, and her days in the church choir. She also details the days when Whitney reached the top of her singing career, her movie roles and how drugs became a part of not only Whitney’s life but also for Michael and Gary, her two sons. Cissy also tells about Whitney’s marriage to Bobby Brown but states she did not blame him for Whitney’s problems. This just touches some of the things covered in Remembering Whitney. There are plenty more details about Whitney Houston that the reader probably does not know.

Remembering Whitney is a story of a mother’s love for her daughter who she affectionately called “Nippy”. Even though there were bad times, Cissy Houston did her best to point out the good times in Whitney’s life and career.

Whitney Houston was a huge talent and it is so tragic that her life ended the way it did. Just think what it would have been like if Whitney continued to sing those type of songs that made her famous. Not only was her death such a tragic loss to the music industry but also to anyone who enjoyed listening to someone who really knew how to sing a song and had a great voice to do it so right.

Why You Should Visit Mount Maunganui

Like Mount Fujiyama and the River Avon, New Zealand’s Mount Maunganui has a tautological name: it literally means Mount Big Mountain. Officially, it’s supposed to be called Mauao, but no one can say that, so everyone just calls it The Mount.

It’s not much of a mountain really, more a big hill. It’s quite pretty, sitting there at the end of the peninsula, overlooking Tauranga harbour on one side and the Bay of Plenty on the other. You can be up and down it in less than two hours, and there are different tracks for different levels of fitness. There’s even a track that goes around the base, which makes for a very nice walk indeed, as the waves crashing into the boulders are enthralling.

There are sheep roaming over the Mount, and lots of birds darting through the trees on either side of the paths, but what you go up (and around) it for are the views. On a sunny day, when the pohutukawa are in bloom, you get the green slopes, the red trees, the multicoloured rocks, the golden sand and the crystal-blue sea, not to mention the city stretching along the sandbank.

Two things you must have when walking up the Mount are a hat and a bottle of water. The track can get fairly dusty in summer. Oh, and a camera – the sight of Matakana Island from the top is something you’ll definitely want to take a picture of.

Mount Maunganui is also the name of the settlement at the foot of the Mount, adjacent to the city of Tauranga. It’s a rather posh place, full of penthouses. It’s pretty much the premiere beach resort of New Zealand. There’s some nice shopping to be done there, and nice eating, and there are lots of adventurous activities you can book, such as paragliding, jet skiing, kayaking and swimming with dolphins.

What makes Mount Maunganui special is it’s two different types of beaches in one. The Mount is connected to Tauranga by a long, narrow piece of land. On one side is Pilot Bay, the entrance to Tauranga Harbour, where the water is calm and lake-like. It’s great to swim in with small children, or to kayak around in peace. On the other side is a surfing beach. That’s also great to swim in, but you do have to be careful. It’s a lot more lively on the surfing side. Come summer, it’s got heaps of sunbathing locals and tourists. At the base of the Mount, the two beaches are about a minutes’ walk apart from one another.

What’s great is there’s a holiday park right at the bottom of the Mount, with toilets, showers, laundries, kitchens and barbecues. You have to book because it’s so popular. I know a family that lives in Tauranga and still takes their campervan to the Mount every year, as if they didn’t live close enough already!

Right next to the campervan park is a collection of salt water hot pools. They’re the only sea water pools in New Zealand, naturally heated. I love going there with my mum. You can get massages there, but we never have. You get “massaged” enough by the huge jets in the middle pool – and by “massaged” I mean “pummelled”!

Without a doubt, Mount Maunganui is the perfect New Zealand holiday destination, especially if you’re travelling by campervan.

The Nontraditional College Student by Libby Hancock _ Save Money and Time and Still Earn Your Degree

Are you, or anyone among your family and friends, interested in pursuing a college degree, but don’t because of cost, time constraints, or resistance to spending additional time in the classroom? If so, then the new book, “The Nontraditional College Student,” by Libby Hancock, will prove beneficial.

Hancock, 23, is a Cleveland, Ohio-based author, who completed a four-year Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications in three years, graduated with a high GPA and honors; and spent less than $15,000 on the entire process.

Home-schooled, Hancock dispels common perceptions of attending classes in pajamas and a lack of socialization. She completed the Ohio requirements for high school graduation, passed the ACT with a good score; and pursued a college degree. Her parents told her she would need to finance her own advanced education.

Hancock used two non-accredited institutions to assist her in earning her degree-College Plus and Verity:

College Plus. This institution helps students discover or confirm their career path. Its attributes include class planning, study resource recommendations, and an assigned coach (mentor). The entire program is Internet-based.

Verity. While similar to College Plus, Verity has its differences, including emphasis on discipleship and spiritual growth. It also offers on-campus learning near downtown Indianapolis, Indiana.

CLEP (College Level Examination Program) exams, DSST (DANTES Subject Standardized Tests) and TECEP (Thomas Edison State College Examination Program) allowed Hancock to study on her own; and then take corresponding tests. She describes the process how to convert successful testing into college credit.

CLEP. Currently a way to test out of 33 college classes offered by College Board (the same company that created and administers the famous college readiness ACT tests). All CLEP tests are computer-based and last 90 minutes.

DSST. The military originally designed this testing for military personnel and it now accommodates the general public too. DSST is an acronym for DANTES Subject Standardized Tests (where DANTES stands for the United States Department of Defense’s Defense Activity for nontraditional Education Support program. It currently offers 37 courses.

TECEP. Its testing is combination of multiple choice questions and essays. Hancock describes it as one of the more challenging ways to earn college credit because the website doesn’t offer a detailed breakdown of topics (as do CLEP and DSST).

“One key to receiving great grades in school is discovering your learning style, and then sticking with it,” Hancock says.

Reading textbooks, taking notes and tests can make for a classic case of burnout. Hancock offers tips to help diffuse the monotony of studying, including:

  • Plan the use of your time.
  • Organize your work area to help organize your brain.
  • Mark up your books. If you rent your textbooks, consider taking notes on your computer, print them out and then color-code them for easy reference.

“Being motivated to stay focused on the task at hand and to work hard and fast was not a skill I was born with,” Hancock says. She had to learn to set achievable goals. “Self-motivation takes work. It won’t simply “happen” overnight.”

The American Council on Education (ACE) recognizes most free, online Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) courses. If emergency response aligns with your career goals, Hancock describes the process for converting their completed courses of college credit (fee-based).

ALEKS (Assessment and Learning in Knowledge Spaces) focuses on mathematical studies and is another method to obtain college credit, which Hancock describes.

Hancock endorses doing an internship during college. She emphasizes the importance of logging all of your accomplishments and keeping records for the work you produce for your portfolio.

She herself received an unsolicited invitation via email, to do an eleven-week internship at NASA Glenn Research Center in the Community and Media Relations office.

Hancock enrolled at Thomas Edison State College (TESC) because of their flexible transfer credit policy. She took classes online and learned via online discussion boards, written assignments and final essays or tests. TESC also grants credit for prior learning, showcased by their Prior Learning Assessment (PLA), which features 84 classes in 31 different subjects. She graduated on campus in downtown Trenton New Jersey in October 2011.

“The Nontraditional College Student” is a concise, informative, and inspiring read. Hancock teaches you how to earn a college degree for less money and time. Even if you choose not to pursue your whole degree in nontraditional ways, you’re bound to find tips to help customize your advanced learning.

Hancock recommends “How To Become A Straight-A Student,” by Cal Newport. Discover more about the book at: http://calnewport.com/books/howtobecome.html

The Silver Sphere by Michael Dadich _ Expect the Unexpected

What makes ‘The Silver Sphere’ so fun to read is the same thing that makes it hard to describe succinctly – while reading it, you never know quite what to expect.

Is it a fantasy novel? With swords and sorcery, mystical creatures, a vast new land to explore and a quest to save the world from tyranny, there’s definitely a heavy fantasy element at work here. But it also plays with modern elements, featuring six children from the world we’re all familiar with, a world of video games and schools and malls. How about science fiction? Surprisingly, there’s elements of that here too, with references to gleaming spaceships and strange new games that would be groundbreaking even for us today. There’s some urban fantasy mixed in as well, with inherited powers and a budding love interest forming.

The end result is quite the mashup of different genres, where one of the main characters might make a reference to The Legend of Zelda just before suiting up in his own set of armor and weapons, where another can’t help but think of playing Halo when he sees seasoned warriors blowing off steam by playing an interactive battle simulation. It’s a rich world that Michael Dadich spins out for us in these pages, a world of different races, different customs, and old-school intrigues. He borrows a bit from other stories – I was strongly reminded of the adventure game ‘The Longest Journey’ at several points along the way, and I couldn’t help but think of the movie ‘Willow’ at a couple points too – but for the most part there’s a lot of originality here. Dadich tells his story well, keeping it moving without getting too caught up in the details of it.

This makes the book’s flaws more palatable. If at times elements of the story seem a little too easy, or too convenient, it can be overlooked. For example, when the main characters inherit powers and knowledge from their pair-bonded “kin” in the new world, it mostly works, even if the transition from teenage kinds to battle-hardened warriors seems a bit quick. The odd word choices, too, aren’t a big deal, because the story is kept clipping by at a pace that makes such window dressing almost inconsequential.

But, I like window dressing – a little, at least.

There is a lot of fighting as the story progresses, much of it at least somewhat graphic and gory. I don’t mind that at all but it may not be for all readers, especially those looking for lighter fare. The battle scenes are well-executed and organized, and make for some of the high points in the book.

All that being said, Michael Dadich has skill as a writer to tell a unique story that holds together, with characters that seen genuine and a good ear for dialogue. The issues I had with the book were small ones, and The Silver Sphere stands as a rousing adventure to be read by almost any age.

Not bad for his first book! Let’s hope we get to see more of this new world, and Michael Dadich.
